29 Jan 2012:    Solutions to problem set no. 1 has been posted, and will be reviewed in class on Tuesday, 31 January. For the mid-term test on Thursday, 2 February, you will be responsible for materials up the end of the 26 January lecture. Course notes (Powerpoint slides), problem sets and personal handwritten notes may be used for reference in the test, but no textbook or other reference material or programmable calculator will be allowed. A non-programmable calculator may be used.

16 Jan 2012:    Problem set no. 1 has been posted, and is due after the lecture on Thursday, 26 January.

27 Dec 2011:   You are welcome to register for EECE 452. This course does not involve complex mathematics, but you are expected to be familiar with basic probabilities and discrete random processes. Lectures will start on Thursday, Jan. 5. The first lecture will be a short one to give the course overview. You will be asked to provide an email address that will be used to access the course notes.  


Course Objectives: The objective of this course is to gain an understanding of various issues in designing an optical network. Topics include SONET/SDH, wavelength division multiplexing, framing techniques, traffic grooming, multiple access protocols, virtual topology design, routing and wavelength assignment, protection and restoration, and optical packet switching.


Time: Tuesday/Thursday: 3:30 – 5:00 pm

Textbook (required): Rajiv Ramaswami, Kumar Sivarajan, and Galen Sasaki, Optical Networks: A Practical Perspective, 3rd Edition, Morgan Kaufman Publishers, 2010.
